The exploratory mobile roleplaying game launched in April 2018, and over the course of just over five years, it took players through a full run of studies and mystery in an alternative storyline to the Harry Potter books and movies. Following the full seven-year course of studies, the Hogwarts Mystery students grew up with the initial release of the Beyond Hogwarts expansion in July 2023. The first volume of Beyond Hogwarts ran for 24 chapters, and while the new event isn't a full chapter unto itself, Volume 2 has already released eight of its own chapters so far.

In an interview with Game Rant, a developer of Hogwarts Mystery discusses the evolution of the game and how it has changed since its release.
As shown on the game's official website, the newly launched event has players teaming up with Bill Weasley and would-be Triwizard Cup champion Cedric Diggory to solve a new case. The elite team will be putting their skills to use in a new Cursed Places quest filled with puzzles and mystery. This is the first time players will be traveling to Egypt in the mobile game, and a new post on the official Hogwarts Mystery Twitter account shows a player's avatar standing before a desert oasis, indicating that the new region will play a big part in this event.
Hogwarts Mystery Unlocks a New Chapter Set in Egypt
Aging up the Hogwarts Mystery cast into adults has provided an interesting twist for players. The mobile game generated a lot of pre-release hype from the Harry Potter fan faithful, and the immersion of the original story set in the Wizarding World has been one of its highlights. Still, many players have complained about having to wait on cooldown timers to complete quests, with their only other option being to use microtransactions to keep the story moving forward faster. While it hasn't addressed all of the game's key issues, Beyond Hogwarts has provided adult versions of more than 20 different characters, both original and returning from the books and movies, rewarding longtime players with an experience that transcends their days at the wizarding school.
While this is the first time players will be conducting a magical investigation in Egypt, Beyond Hogwarts has also brought players to many interesting locations in Hogwarts Mystery. So far, these have included the Ministry of Magic, the streets of London, Azkaban, and a return to Hogwarts for the game's first peek inside Moaning Myrtle's bathroom.
