Clash of Clans: Village Layout and Attack Strategy Guide

Clash of Clans has survived more than a decade because its two halves — defending your village and attacking someone else's — reward completely different skills. Here is how to improve both.

Base layout fundamentals

  • Protect the Town Hall and storages at the centre; they are worth the most stars and loot.
  • Separate compartments with walls so troops have to break through each one.
  • Place air defences centrally — air attacks are the most common way to three-star a bad base.
  • Never leave your resource buildings outside the walls at higher Town Halls; that is free loot for raiders.

Attacking properly

Before you attack, look at where the enemy's air defences and Clan Castle are. Pick a side where those are weakest and build your attack around funnelling troops into the centre rather than around it.

Army composition

A balanced army has a tank (giants or golems), a damage core, and a support spell or two. Adding more of one unit type is rarely the answer; covering its weakness is.

Farming versus trophy pushing

Farm with cheap, fast armies aimed at resource buildings. Push trophies in bursts with your strongest army. Trying to do both at once wastes time.

Clan games and war

Donations and war attacks are where most of your progression comes from. Active clans multiply your rewards.
